Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is credited with having invented Afternoon Tea. Sometime during the 1840's whilst suffering from "that sinking feeling"betwixt luncheon and dinner she requested something small to eat in the late afternoon. This small repast successfully staved off her hunger pangs and Afternoon Tea was born.
Anna Maria invited friends to share her Afternoon Tea and the meal soon became very popular with the upper and middle classes. What started off as a fairly light snack soon became a hearty but still dainty feast of sandwiches, scones and cakes all served with a pot of tea.
These days you don't have to wait until after luncheon to enjoy Afternoon Tea, here at The Orchard Tea Room it has proved to be a popular lunch time treat with many of our customers. We've even made it possible for you to treat someone to Afternoon Tea in your absence with the introduction of our Afternoon Tea Gift Vouchers.
